UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed.
THE BIG GIVEAWAY IS FINALLY HERE!
Read on for:
- Information about how to enter a double giveaway multiple times;
- My review of “Nightmares”; and
- An interview with the author, Donna Jean McDunn!
Note that these will be presented in backward order, too! (Kind of like a countdown…) 🙂 Before you read on, let me preface this by saying I hope you all had a sPoOkY hAlLoWeEn last night! I’m so glad that we’re in a new, exciting month; the month of November is famed for being NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). If you doubt you can write a novel in one month, you should read this post. The numbers will amaze you. If reading is your thing instead of writing, READ ON, and meet Donna!
Meet Donna
I don’t quite know how Donna found me, but she posted this comment back in August when I invited people to post links to their blogs/websites (which you can still do, if you have not yet done this!):
When I read this, I was immediately intrigued. I love reading, and mysteries are my favourite kinds of stories to read! I decided to contact her and see if she would be interested in doing an “exchange” – a copy of her book for a review + an interview on my blog. I was thrilled when she agreed!
It took me a while to read this, since I was also reading another book at the time (I’m always reading something!) but once I got into it, I was hooked. 😀
What Nightmares is about [the blurb on the back cover]:
Eighteen-year old Emily Preston has it all. She’s beautiful, strong and confident. But just weeks before graduating from high school, the nightmares she’d experienced as a child, begin to plague her once more. When a mysterious voice warns that she must remember her past and accept her gift of seeing into the future in order to save her boyfriend’s life, she believes she’s losing her mind. The nightmares escalate into visions of long ago and memories begin to return. Will Emily allow herself to accept the gift or will she lose everything, including her life?
You can read part of Chapter One in this post on Donna’s blog.
Here is the review I posted to Goodreads:
“Nightmares” is a well-crafted suspenseful tale that encompasees psychic visions, murderous intents, love, betrayal and acceptance within a captivating storyline. By third chapter, you’ll be hooked, drawn in by the author to the dilemmas faced by a teenage girl – a young woman – who has a special “gift” of both seeing and hearing things. You’ll join her on her journey of discovery and acceptance while she and her boyfriend match wits with a killer and frequently find themselves in precarious situations. The plot twist will both surprise and satisfy you and leave you wanting more. That is how it was for me – a very good read, indeed!
My Interview With Author Donna Jean McDunn:
I decided to use Mary Jaksch’s email approach to interviewing for this interview. I found it to be much more effective than merely sending off a list of questions for her to answer. The back-and-forth constant emails allowed Donna and I to really connect with one another on a personal level. The good news for you? A giveaway was born! (Keep reading for details!)
LR: Since you are a writer, I’m betting that English was your favourite subject in school. Was it? 🙂
DJM: Yes, it was. That and Reading. Do they still have a Reading class? Next in line was History, especially Ancient History. I think it had something to do with all the reading involved.
LR: How long have you been writing, and what made you decide to become a writer?
DJM: I started making up stories in grade school, but it wasn’t until the 6th grade that I began dreaming of becoming an author. Then life got in my way and I discovered boys.
I married fairly young at nineteen, just like a lot of people did especially back then. We had kids right away and after the third daughter, we decided that was enough. The years simply flew by and there never seemed to be enough hours in the day – or if there were, enough energy left to do any writing. It was always in the back of my mind even though I never mentioned it to anyone.
I would sometimes take out my writing and do a little, but I never let anyone read. Then something wonderful happened: my daughters grew up, got married and began giving us grandchildren. The oldest grandkids were voracious readers. My house was full of books I’d read over the years, so they knew I loved books and they would give me theirs to read. One day in 2008, I was reading one of those books when I thought, I should write the kids a book and publish it just for them. So I started out writing a story about the feral cat who came to live under our woodpile.
I knew my idea was good, but I also could see the story lacked good writing, so I decided to take a writing course offered at The Institute of Children’s Literature. That first course was enough to help me write their book and I gave it to them at Christmas that year. That course however is what spurred me on to want to publish my short stories and eventually a novel.
So I went on to take the novel course and later I took two more courses with Long Ridge Writers Group. I did a total of four courses and I’ve never regretted any of them. I highly recommend anyone who wants to write, to take their courses or at least find some similar ones to take. The writing life is one where we can never stop learning and growing as a writer.
LR: What does your family think of you being a writer/published author? Did they support you throughout your journey?
DJM: My family is very supportive of my writing. I do think they were shocked when I found a publisher for my first novel. My husband is not a reader and has never read anything I’ve written. He also thinks I’m crazy for staying up half the night writing, but he supports me in his own way. Sometimes he’ll walk by my office and if the door is open, he’ll look in and shake his head. He has a tough time understanding why anyone would write anything but automotive manuals for working on vehicles. I know he’s proud of what I’ve accomplished though because I hear him telling people about it all the time. 🙂
LR: Do you ever feel lonely? Writers spend tons of time alone, writing. How do you cope with loneliness – if you feel it?
DJM: It is true that writing is something writers do alone, but honestly, I’ve never felt lonely – not yet anyway! I still cherish the times when I have a day when it’s just me and my computer at home. It doesn’t happen very often – that’s why I stay up after my husband is asleep and write.
Take, for example, last weekend. I had three of my grandsons spending the night – two are twelve and one is seven. They love to come to the farm and play. Actually, all the grandkids love it here. Just like their mothers before them, they go on the hill (where there are trees) and build forts. This weekend was just the three boys, but sometimes all eight grandkids spend the weekend and then the three oldest girls build a fort, too. They are ages 17, 15, 9. The youngest is only eighteen months and her mom won’t let her help yet. When all the grandkids are here there are four boys, ages 13, 12, 12 & 7.
There may be a time when all the grandkids are grown and/or married and things settle down around here, but by then, I’m hoping for great grandkids coming to visit us and they’ll be building forts too. This past weekend after it was too dark for the three boys to be outside and they were watching TV, I sneaked into my office and was writing when Dylan – he’s twelve – walked by and asked me if I was writing one of my books. I said yes and he said, as much writing as I do, I must have a million books written by now. I just laughed and said, oh I wish that were true, but it takes a lot of time to write even one book, but I’m well on my way to having five finished soon and that’s if I count the one I wrote for just you grandkids. He seemed pretty impressed with that number, even though it wasn’t a million.
LR: Are you still planning a sequel to Nightmares? Can you tell me about it? Do you have a release date for it yet?
DJM: The sequel to “Nightmares” is with my line editor and I’m expecting her to send it back to me soon so I can accept or reject her edits. The title is “Visions” and yes, I’ll tell you more about it in a minute. I don’t have a release date yet. I haven’t received a new contract either, but should within the next week or so and then they’ll give me a probable release date. It still has to go through the content editor, too.
Sometime early next year, the second book of the series “Visions” will be released. It continues Emily, Tony and their friends’ adventures into a paranormal world and adulthood.
It begins when an old friend from Tony’s past, Stephanie, comes to Charles City to stay with friends while her parents are out of the country. Emily becomes suspicious that she’s not what she appears to be when she sees a shadow hovering over her. When the shadow begins to not only influence Devon, Tony’s brother, but appears to have taken possession of Tony, she becomes concerned that the shadow’s plan is to force him into Stephanie’s more than willing arms.
The dog, Max, that was murdered by a psychopath almost fourteen years ago, returns. Emily believes he came to protect her from the evil that’s inside Tony’s friend.
Emily and her best friend, Kaylee have decided to move into an apartment together and share expenses. It’s here that Max brings, Dana, a twelve year old girl ghost. The girl has no memory of who she is or what happened to her, but she wants Emily to find her family so she can return home.
Aiden Shaw, Tony’s deceased father sends her, Ashish Mehta or Ash for short, who is homeless and wants to sleep on the girl’s couch. He has a gift similar to Emily’s but much more advanced since he’s been practicing it since he was a child. The problem Emily has with him is the strong connection she feels, and learning that he is her psychic soul mate does not make things any easier when Tony, her ‘real’ soul mate meets him.
LR: What will you do after “Visions” is released? Are you working on anything else?
DJM: Yes, I’ve also been planning book 3. The title “Premonitions” is the only thing I’ve really decided for that one, but I’ve started a few character sketches and scenes I think I will be include in it.
LR: Will you be using the same publisher? Why or why not?
DJM: I am going through the same publisher, MuseItUp Publishing. One reason is the contract I signed states that they get first chance at publishing a sequel, but I probably would have sent it to them anyway. They have been great.
LR: What advice would you give to someone who wants to publish a book?
DJM: There are so many options open to anyone who wants to publish a book, yet it can be very daunting and discouraging. If their dream is to be published by the Big Six in New York, find a small publisher as I did, or self publish, my advice would be, never give up and continue to write, because just when you think you have failed, something wonderful might happen. You’ll never know until you try and as long as you don’t give up, you’ll always have that chance of fulfilling your dream.
LR: Thanks, Donna. That’s great advice! Thanks also for allowing me to interview you and for being here for others to meet and get to know you!
DJM: My pleasure; thanks for having me!
LR: You’re welcome!

Tweeted and followed! I also mentioned this on Aleshia’s Adventures. The book sounds very intriguing. Donna, it is a pleasure to “meet” you!
Thanks for mentioning this, Aleshia. 🙂
I’m not sure if Donna will reply, she’s been busy writing! 😉
Thanks Aleshia for stopping by and your nice comment about “Nightmares”. As Lorraine mentioned, I have been busy writing, but I do try to make time for commenting and making friends. I’m glad to meet you.
Donna, I’m happy you responded! Aleshia’s life is pretty interesting – she lives in an RV and travels around. 😉 But so far she has yet to come visit me. LOL
It’s too cold up where you are Lorraine!
You’re telling me! I hate it here. I am definitely moving somewhere else when my parents are no longer here…
It was my pleasure Donna!
What a great interview you did with Donna Lorraine!
Donna seems to be writing books that I love! When it comes to mysteries and especially the paranormal, I’m there. I work with paranormal activities, but that’s another story. I will check this out. I do need a break and a book is to me the best way to take one.
Donna, I just love the way you said that you can be alone and write but you are not lonely. That shows the passion you have.
Congratulations!
-Donna
Thanks, Donna. Donna is great. Um, are you confused yet, Donna? Too many Donnas here…LOL
Thanks for stopping by – I was on your blog earlier! 😉 But I guess you know that.
I like interviewing authors. I always learn something from them!
Good luck in the giveaway!
Hi Donna, you can call me Donna Jean, so we don’t confuse one another. LOL Thanks for visiting Lorraine’s blog. I hope I see you over on mine too.
I love books like this. I can’t wait to read it. This is the perfect time of the year to cuddle up and read a good suspenseful book.
LOL And I think anytime is a good time to read! Good luck in the contest, Danielle!
This post makes me want to become an author. I love the idea of this book and would love to read it.
Hope you win, Becc! 😀 Thanks for coming back and commenting!
I too am a fan of thriller and somewhat paranormal books and tv shows (i loved ‘Medium’ when it was running 🙂
I really liked the part where Donna shares she is writing alone alright but never felt lonely. I totally get that! Sometimes i just want to be left alone with my thoughts and to write for as long as i want and feel like. Being lonely has nothing to do with it, i agree 😀
Good luck with the new book release, Donna! And thanks for featuring this author and book on your blog, Lorraine!
Diana, I realize that most writers don’t feel lonely; they just need to be alone to write! (Well, some of them; I can write with people around me but I prefer to be alone when I’m writing.)
Good luck in the giveaway!

I just noticed that the giveaway is 3 weeks, so I’ll leave it up until then… 🙂 *CAT*
Thanks! Good to know! 😀
Lorraine – I, too, am a mystery/thriller fan. This book has an interesting twist as it also seems to cross over into the sci/fi genre.
I don’t know if I would classify this as sci-fi, but it is paranormal. Is that the same thing?
Regardless, if you like mysteries, you’ll like this book, then, Jeanette! Thanks for commenting! 😀
Thank you Lorraine for the interview and the book review. I truly appreciate it more than I can say. You did a great job and thank you for all the nice things you said about me and my book.
You should know by now, Donna, that I only speak the truth! 🙂 All I did was relay my thoughts and feelings about your book to others. I’m glad you like them, though! 😉
THANK YOU for the interview, and for the idea of this giveaway! It was great learning more about your grandchildren, too. You sound like you’re a really good Grandma! I’m happy to know you.
Wonderful interview Donna, I really enjoyed getting to know you better and your writing background. I now have this picture in my mind of you sitting at your desk typing away and your husband walking by, shaking his head!
You have been so encouraging to me as a ‘late-bloomer’ to writing and as I’ve said before, I am so very inspired by your writing successes. You give me the push I need to keep writing, no matter what and to never, ever give up!
Lorraine, I’m so glad to have found your blog through Donna and through this giveway promotion. I have now signed up to follow you, not just because of the giveaway, but because I am now really looking forward to reading more of your work.
Thank you Donna and Lorraine! 🙂
Sherri, I appreciate your comments. I barely know where to begin, since I’ve already been to your blog and feel a connection with you as a writer, a poet, and a woman who has faced much adversity during her life. Sigh. We really seem to be two of a kind – which is good because great minds think alike! LOL
Although it goes without saying, I’ll say it anyway. Thanks for following my blog. I just know that this is the start of a great friendship. Thanks also for posting your links (and a brief bio) on my Promote Yourself! page.
I also can clearly envision Donna’s husband walking by and shaking his head, AND the love he has for Donna while doing so… 🙂
Donna sure can paint a picture, can’t she, Sherri?
Yes Lorraine, I also felt an instant connection with you and the beginnings of a lovely friendship when I came over to your blog and read all about you which is why I’m so thankful to Donna for sending me your way 🙂
Thank YOU so much for visiting my blog and for the follow, also for taking the time to read several of my posts and for your amazing comments and encouragement, I do really appreciate it. You are a very genuine person who does just what she says she will, someone with great integrity and a genuine, honest spirit. This shines through!
As for Donna, yes, she really does paint a picture in the most wonderful way 🙂
I try to be a woman of my word. I wasn’t always this way – but I like myself better now. 😀 I’m glad that my loving spirit is appreciated. Thanks for noticing it, and for your wonderful words, too!
All sincerely meant Lorraine, and the thing is we are on a journey and always learning and changing, hopefully for the better (that’s what I tell myself anyway!) Your loving spirit has been forged in the fire of your adversities and now you can share this with others. Wonderful 🙂
You are such a lovely lady, Sherri. I’m so happy Donna brought us together! 😀
Ahh that’s so kind of you Lorraine (although it is you who is lovely) and yes, me too 🙂
Let’s agree right now that we’re BOTH lovely ladies, then! LOL
LOL 🙂 x
🙂
Thank you Sherri for getting to know me and my friend Lorraine. We both appreciate it. I also enjoyed reading your history on Lorraine’s other post on promoting your blog. This has been a lot of fun and I am so grateful for the Internet and all of the ways we get to meet new people. What a wonderful time to be alive!
I agree!
Donna, it’s been my pleasure, I thank YOU!! Isn’t it just a wonderful time to be alive?! Without the internet I would never have met you, Lorraine and all the other wonderful bloggers here on WordPress and other social media platforms. Again, I wish you all the very best with your book giveaway and all the exposure you and Lorraine can get. I’m just so happy that I can do my small part 🙂
