Today, we are going to talk about several things you can do when you feel like giving up:

– how to cope with overwhelm
– how to outsource tasks (and which ones to outsource)
– how to stay on track (stay motivated)

OUR MANY RESPONSIBILITIES CAUSE OVERWHELM

As business owners, we have many responsibilities.

These include:

  • Marketing our products or services (finding customers)
  • Dealing with customers (and customer complaints)
  • Keeping accurate records (bookkeeping)
  • Managing our websites and social media accounts
  • Ordering supplies
  • Finding time to do “all the extras”

All of these responsibilities can cause us to become overwhelmed.

Today, we are going to talk about how we can cope with such feelings, learn which tasks can we can outsource to others (and where to find such people to help us), and what to do to help us stay on track and continue to be motivated to not only run our businesses, but grow them.

HOW TO COPE WITH OVERWHELM – 10 WAYS

There are many things we can do when we feel overwhelmed:

1: Breathe.

This is important! We need to avoid anxiety and heart attacks!

You can simply stop what you’re doing, and take some deep breaths.

You can also practice meditation, which involves doing deep breathing exercises and centering yourself.

2: Do some yoga or engage in other exercises.

Exercise is a great way to clear your mind. Plus, it’s good for you!

You can do some yoga, go for a walk or a run, dance, or do anything else that gets your body moving!

3: Take a break.

This is probably the most obvious option!

Find something that takes your mind off work. Watch TV. Go out for coffee with a friend. Go shopping. Take an art class. Knit or crochet.

The key is to find something you enjoy doing, which will make you feel relaxed and refreshed!

4: Stop scheduling appointments.

Keep a visual calendar in sight so you can see how busy your week is going to be.

Do not schedule more than one thing a day!

5: Start saying NO to others.

Say YES to only the important things! Prioritize!

6: Be realistic about your time.

We are all given 1440 minutes to spend each day. What you do with them will determine how you feel.

To make the most of your time, you can use a timer to help you stay focused on your task. Decide how much time you want to spend on a specific task, then track how long it actually takes you to complete it.

Once you have a clear understanding how long (or how little) a task actually takes, you can be more realistic with your time, and plan to use your time wisely.

For example, how long does it take to check your Facebook notifications and respond to everyone? Do some days take you longer than others, depending on what you’ve posted?

Once you know your “feedback schedule,” you can allot specific times to reply to everyone.

7: Work during your daily productivity peak.

What time of the day are you most productive? Work during that time!

8: Stay organized.

Keep “on top” of things, and don’t let things pile up or get out of control.

Clean your desk daily. Close tabs on your laptop.

Handle a piece of paper ONCE. (Best advice I ever got from my mentor!)

9: Celebrate!

Focus on your achievements, celebrate your victories, and take time to appreciate how far you have come during your journey.

Often, we only think about all of the things on our TO DO lists; we don’t stop and consider how many things we have checked off!

Try keeping a DONE list to help you remember all of the things you have done!

10 : Get in the right mindset at the beginning of each day.

Do you wake up feeling groggy? Do you have a hard time climbing out of bed, or functioning until you have had 3 cups of coffee? Do you struggle with motivating yourself because you simply have so much to do that you don’t know where to start? (Raise your hands!)

What is our mindset?

Our mindset is how we view things. It involves our attitudes, and a particular way of thinking. Simply put, it is our state of mind.

Our mindset is made up of our thoughts and beliefs.

Each of us has a set of different thoughts that regularly occupy our minds. These thoughts are determined by our experiences, our education, where we live, and how we were raised.

I use positive affirmations to help me “right my mind.”

What are positive affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that are repeated on a daily basis that alter your current (usually negative) beliefs by sinking into your subconscious.

Even though these statements might not initially be true, the constant repetition of them eventually makes them a reality!

This is a strange phenomenon, but it is also a theory that has been proven to work. In a way, it is kind of magical!

So… I read my personalized list of my positive affirmations DAILY, at the beginning of the day, so I can change the way I think (and be more successful).

Some examples:

I deserve happiness and success.

I am motivated.

I am in control of my life and my destiny.

I am becoming the best version of myself that I can be, and no one can stop me.

I am unstoppable!

I love myself and my life.

I am blessed and grateful for all I have.

Doors of opportunity are constantly opened for me.

I expect great things from myself, and I will achieve my goals.

I feel strong, excited, passionate, and powerful!

Today I am concentrating on meeting my goals.

Today I am concentrating on moving my life forward.

I am a strong, capable, independent woman who can achieve ANYTHING I set my mind to!

I am a beautiful person, inside and out.

I am helpful.

I am smart.

I am successful.

An intelligent woman lives inside me, and today that woman is running my business.

FIND HELP AND OUTSOURCE TASKS!

What tasks can others do to help you?

  • Social media posting
  • Cleaning
  • Bookkeeping
  • ETC.

Where can you find people to help you?

  • Fiverr
  • Virtual Assistants (VA)
  • Friends
  • Family

Maybe you need someone to create images for you. You don’t necessarily need to hire a graphics designer for this; many people possess such skills.

I learned how to create images for my blog posts using tools such as Canva and Paint. Other people use Photoshop.

There are a ton of tools you can use, and a ton of people who you can hire for this.

For offline work, consider hiring students. You will save money by being able to pay them a lower wage, and you will give them some extra spending money. Win-win!

For online work, you can hire a Virtual Assistant (VA). You can find qualified people for a cheap rate on sites like Fiverr and Upwork. You can also find them elsewhere, if you look hard enough.

For example, maybe you need someone to manage your social media accounts. Hire a VA.

Maybe you need someone to write blog posts for you. Hire a freelance writer (such as myself!).

Is getting help worth it?

Consider the task/profit benefit of your time. For example, if you can earn $65 an hour editing, and it takes you 1 hour to schedule your social media posts for the week (and costs $20), what would you rather spend that hour doing?

Hire someone to do the tasks you hate!

HOW TO STAY ON TRACK (STAY MOTIVATED)

The obvious one is to use TO DO lists to stay on track. Ones that are handwritten have the biggest effect on your productivity, because studies have shown that if you write something out, you are 42% more likely to achieve it (as opposed to pressing letters on a phone, tablet, or keyboard).

You can also set deadlines for yourself, and use reward systems. For example, if I finish Task A by noon, I will treat myself to a donut (or whatever treat you want).

But how can you stay positive, happy, and motivated?

  • Change your thoughts
  • Use positive affirmations
  • Practice gratitude (be grateful)

  • Hire a coach or find an accountability partner

You can hire a coach or consultant (such as myself) who can help you develop a plan of action and then help keep you accountable to that plan by speaking to them on a regular basis.

  • Surround yourself with positive, successful people
  • Plan for the worst
  • Change your environment — in two ways – 1: Work in another location, and 2: Decorate it with inspirational pieces
  • Remember WHY you started (Why you want to achieve your goal? Why is this goal important to you? List at least three ways this goal will improve you and help you be a better person, whether you succeed or fail. And what you stand to lose if you don’t give 100% or if you quit your goal?)

  • Realize that success involves sacrifices and takes time to achieve!
  • Channel your passion and choose goals based on your values, not on what others expect from you.
  • Attribute your failures to the right causes (Ex. Social media growth goal of getting 10,000 Twitter followers each month – if you fail to do this, it is probably because you had a poor social media strategy and didn’t spend your 10 minutes on Twitter each day, not because you’re simply lazy or worthless à Consider Thomas Edison and how many experiments were done before the light bulb was invented. He failed 1000 times before achieving success! à Henry Ford failed and went broke five times before he succeeded)

It’s natural for bloggers to want to boost their blog’s traffic.

But many bloggers don’t know how to do that.

One way is to produce quality content. But which kind of content works best?

Introduction: When frustration sets in

You stayed awake all through the night writing what you called “the perfect” blog post that would transform your blog traffic forever.

You religiously applied all the excellent blog post best practices as suggested by the experts – you used eye-catching, shareable images; you added paragraph breaks; you used H tags; and you made your content easily digestible. There’s a new trend on the internet.

A lot of marketers have recently started publishing content that shares their success and achievements in various fields.

Interestingly, this type of content goes viral within a short period of publishing. I mean who wouldn’t want to read a blog post that shows “How We Grew Our Blog to 5,000+ Subscribers in Five Weeks”?

No, I didn’t make up that title; it’s actually a success story from the guys at Groove HQ.

Now, judging by the fact that list-building has become a tedious activity on the internet today, I doubt if there’s anyone that won’t jump up on hearing that someone generated 5k email subscribers in 5 weeks.

Essentially, people go crazy upon seeing blog posts like this. Another reason that success-stories work is because, just like case studies, they also have a compelling story that their readers can easily relate to, and they usually follow a step-by-step tactic to tackle the problem.

Using the title above as an example:

Alex Turnbull, the founder of Groove HQ, noticed that these types of content were becoming some of their major hits. But like most other new bloggers and marketers, he had no interesting story to share with his readers.

If you can give them something new, unique, actionable, and that guarantees results, you’ve won the battle – they’ll help you and promote the hell out of it, and it’ll keep bringing you lots of traffic and leads until you beg them to stop (which I’m sure you won’t).

Unlike the success-stories type of posts we mentioned earlier, these types of content will help your audience tackle a problem via your newfound approach.

Similarly, before the year 2010, the term “Growth Hacker” was not in existence.

But after Sean Ellis with the help of Patrick Vlaskovits and Hiten Shah introduced it in one of his blog posts, it became one of the most frequently used terms in the internet marketing industry. Andrew Chen later introduced it to a wider audience.

Don’t worry. The good news is that you can do it yourself with tools like Easel.ly, Canva, and Infogr.am. It’s pretty easier than you think.

While designing your infographic, have the following in mind:

  • Remember your primary message as you choose your colors, typography, and layout
  • Just like an excellent blog post often begin with an outline, outline what you wish to visualize in your infographic to give actionable and factual information
  • Learn the five fundamentals of good design: repetition, consistency, alignment, proximity, and hierarchy
  • Email it to some of the influencers in your industry, and also share it on infographic sites like Visual.ly

4. Use Unique Research, Backed Up With Data

If you can carry out thorough research about something in your industry, and present it to your audience, that’ll go a long way.

Here’s the point: Digging up great pieces of information that nobody else has in an industry is a sure sign of authority.

However, the bad news is that researching and coming up with useful data that will really go viral in your niche isn’t a piece of cake. It requires a lot of patience, efforts, and sometimes… money.

However, if you can diligently do it to the best of your knowledge, the outcome will be totally worth it in the end.

For example, when CoSchedule’s published their findings from analyzing nearly one million headlines on the OkDork blog, it really gave them some excellent exposure in terms of shares and backlinks.

What We Learned Analyzing 1 Million Blog Headlines

The post generated over 400 social shares, and more than 500 backlinks from 97 referring domains as you can see on the screenshot below.

Now, looking at that post title, you’ll agree with me that the post is worth sharing and linking to.

Fortunately, if you don’t have the necessary resources to carry out this type of research, you don’t have to panic. One good way to approach it is to smartly summarize the findings of other people just like the guys at Authority Nutrition did with their 11 proven benefits of ginger.

But if you can provide data from your own experiences, it’ll be much better. For example, good case studies equally count as research, provided you give tangible results and numbers.

5. Create Roundups of Other People’s Content

The weekly roundup is yet another excellent tactic for creating valuable content that your audience will like. Writing is not always easy, and there is a difference between academic and content writing.

It’s also hard for us to be productive writers all the time.

With all the various posts being published on the web on a daily basis, it’s easy for people to miss some of the content that will add value to their business and life.

Now, if you can make it a duty to always assemble this content for them in one place, they’ll thank you for it. Not only will they share and link to it, but the bloggers you mentioned are also 100% likely to do the same, which means more traffic and backlinks.

The weekly roundup post is usually a summary of the best content you’ve seen in your industry over a period of time.

Now, you can be doing this on a weekly basis like most bloggers, but if you don’t have much time, I recommend trying it once every month, so there won’t be much pressure on you to consistently find great content in your industry.

The easiest way to go about this type of post is to track of the industry blogs in your niche. You can do this by subscribing to their email list and also following them on the various social media platforms.

Whenever they share something that’s really amazing, and you’re sure your audience will also find fascinating, make a note of it and prepare it for your round-up.

Finally, you don’t have to quit because your blog isn’t growing the way you want, all you have to do to turn things around for good is to give your audience exactly what they want… so they will return to your blog!

7: Ethical entrepreneurs also embrace humanity. They create clean work environments, they support the lives of workers outside of the workplace, they donate goods or services to a local charity, and they support the arts.

8: Ethical entrepreneurs also ecologically friendly. They know we all share this Earth together and so they take small steps daily in both their business practices and their lifestyle to help sustain our planet’s longevity. They do this by using sustainable materials, recycling wherever possible, and using eco-friendly cleaning products.

Some food for thought:

You’re going to face ethical dilemmas in your business. That’s a fact.

How you handle them, however, will speak volumes to your character and to your business. For example, you might be asked to give a job reference for a friend who’s clearly not qualified for the job. What would you do?

The best way is… don’t give anyone anything bad to talk about!

Remember, word-of-mouth marketing is still the best type of marketing there is! If customers are happy, they are going to sing praises about you and your business!

Your customers will even use social media to do this!

Which brings me to the next point…

Entrepreneurial Excellence – Way #2: Use Social Media to Grow Your Business

After you have successfully branded your business (HINT: read my 12-Section Guide on Branding Your Business), you can use social media to grow it.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Google Plus are all highly active social media networks.

Each site has different ways for growing your business, but all of them allow you to engage with others via a comment section.

  • Leverage the testimonials from your satisfied customers. Include what they say on your website AND in social media posts. (HINT: read how to get testimonials from your clients and also about their massive power!)
  • Be insanely helpful to others. Share things that are related to your niche, and don’t always promote your own business. This might sound counterintuitive, but it actually works the opposite way. If you constantly help others, they will become curious about you. They will visit your website. They will look at your services or product. Likely, they will then buy them, because you have built up your reputation for being helpful!

Consider this: who are you more likely to buy from? Someone who always says, “Me, me, me…”? Or someone who says, “Here is something that will help you. It’s great…”?

I know I would pick the second person!

  • Start a conversation.
  • Ask others to share. It’s been proven that asking helps! People need to be reminded to share things. They don’t always remember to unless they are reminded! Make sharing easy by installing sharing icons on your website, too.
  • Be human. Be honest. Be vulnerable. People like REAL people, not phonies!
  • Understand your customers’ needs. You can then give them what they want… which means bringing them to your website to see what your business is all about!
  • Optimize your social media accounts. Link back to your website on each one.
  • Use hashtags in your social media updates… but use them carefully. Use relevant hashtags pertinent to your business.
  • Provide FAQs. Give your customers answers to frequently asked questions. It will save you time and allow you to answer their questions efficiently.
  • Create a social media plan or posting strategy and stick to it. There is a ton of research on the internet that shows you the best times to post to each social platform. Additionally, you can analyze the reactions to your posts as well as the reach you get using analytics. You can even look at your posts on your Facebook page to see which times and which type of posts got you the most reach. (It will say, X number of people reached below each post. The time you posted that post will also be visible.)

  • When you find something that works, capitalize on that.
  • Host webinars. Get people to sign up for free things, then sell to them later.
  • Make sure your content aligns with your message.
  • Post unpopular content too. Taken from an article on Entrepreneur, “There are a few types of content that typically don’t get a lot of likes and shares, including testimonials, charity posts, press features and important blog posts. These are really important pieces of content when it comes to establishing your validity in the market, yet they aren’t the type of posts that typically get a lot of attention. Just because this type of content isn’t getting likes or shares doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be posting it. It may not be popular, but it helps build a foundation for your company.”

Entrepreneurial Excellence – Way #3:  Outsource Tasks / Hire Help

Seek help when you need it! Hire someone to do tasks you would rather not do.

The key is to outsource tasks you don’t want to do so you can focus on others areas of your business!

For offline work, consider hiring students. You will save money by being able to pay them a lower wage, and you will give them some extra spending money. Win-win!

For online work, you can hire a Virtual Assistant (VA). You can find qualified people for a cheap rate on sites like Fiverr and Upwork. You can also find them elsewhere, if you look hard enough.

For example, maybe you need someone to manage your social media accounts. Hire a VA. Or take a course on how to become one! (aff link)

Maybe you need someone to write blog posts for you. Hire a freelance writer (such as myself!).

Maybe you need someone to create images for you. You don’t necessarily need to hire a graphics designer for this; many people possess such skills. I learned how to create images for my blog posts using tools such as Canva and Paint. Other people use Photoshop. There are a ton of tools you can use, and a ton of people who you can hire for this.

By reducing your workload, you will be able to be more successful as both an individual AND an entrepreneur. Therefore, your entrepreneurial excellence will be more easily within reach!

Other Factors that Can Enhance our Success and Excellence as Entrepreneurs:

Successful people possess certain characteristics.

They are driven, motivated, and hard-working.

They make good decisions. They plan things out to a T.

They manage their money properly.

They also take risks.

And they know how to deal with both stress and failure.

People don’t generally choose their careers randomly. They “select ones that provide an appropriate match for their own skills, preferences, motives, characteristics, and interests.” (Enhancing Entrepreneurial Excellence, page 9.)

Some people have a higher tolerance to stress than others. Some people even thrive off it! Take emergency room doctors, for example. These people need chaos in their lives, and find it boring when nothing happens during a shift! Other people, however, hate stress and chaos. Instead, they prefer peacefulness, serenity, and a calm environment.

This factor is known as “psychological capital and involves high levels of self-efficacy (confidence in one’s own ability to successfully complete various tasks), optimism, hope, and resilience – the ability to ‘snap back’ after setbacks. (Enhancing Entrepreneurial Excellence, page 14).

According to one article, the Top 10 Qualities of Highly Successful People are:

  1. Drive
  2. Self-reliance
  3. Willpower
  4. Patience
  5. Integrity
  6. Passion
  7. Connection
  8. Optimism
  9. Self-confidence
  10. Communication

If you fall short in one of these areas, there are things you can do increase your motivation and skills.

You can take an online course.

You can read articles for free online.

You can read books from the library.

You can hire a coach or consultant (such as myself) who can help you develop a plan of action and then help keep you accountable to that plan by speaking to them on a regular basis.

Whatever you decide to do, be sure it’s in your best interests and the best interests of your company!

3 Ways to Change Your Mindset and Become More Successful

Are you as successful as you want to be?

Are you completely happy with your life?

Do you wish you could be happier or more successful?

Good news – you can!

All you have to do is change your mindset and success will be yours!

How do I know this? I’m living proof.

I used to be a prostitute, a high-school dropout, and a drug addict. But I also went to university for 5 years and became a high school Math and English teacher. Now I am a business owner, a freelance writer and editor, a coach and mentor, and an author!

In fact, the first two articles in this series are chapters from my book, From Nope to Hope.

3 Ways to Change Your Mindset

There are many ways you can change your mindset. The best 3 techniques involve:

1: Using positive affirmations 

2: Use Meditation, the Law of Attraction, and Visualization to Be Successful

3: Conquer your fears

Let’s look at each of these ways in-depth now. I’ll be sharing my personal experiences with each of these ways, too, to prove they work!

Because this is the 3rd post in a 3-part series, I’ll simply recap the first two ways, and then get into today’s topic of discussing how to conquer your fears.

1: Change Your Mindset by Using Positive Affirmations

Our mindset involves our attitudes and a particular way of thinking. Basically, our mindset is made up of our thoughts and beliefs.

Our brains consist of two parts: the conscious and the subconscious. By changing our subconscious thoughts, we can change our negative conscious thoughts and replace them with positive ones.

One of the ways we can change our mindset is by using positive affirmations.

Affirmations are positive statements that are repeated on a daily basis that alter your current (usually negative) beliefs by sinking into your subconscious. Even though these statements might not initially be true, the constant repetition of them eventually makes them a reality!

2: Use Meditation, the Law of Attraction, and Visualization to Be Successful

Meditation is a technique that basically helps you to clear your mind. It has many therapeutic benefits and helps you focus.

The Law of Attraction asserts that our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are the cause of what we attract into our lives. The theory is that if we consciously direct our focus on what we want, we will get more of it.

The visualization technique is used in conjunction with meditation and The Law of Attraction. By practicing this technique, you can make your dreams come true!

3: Conquer your fears

Omit the “limiting” fears from your life and move towards success.

Our fears limit us, so we need to rid ourselves of them!

What are you afraid of? Failure? Success?

Most of us fear the unknown.

Some fears are built during your childhood, and few are developed over the years as you grow and face new challenges.

I know each and every one of us fears something or someone.

Conquering your fears can be easy, if you know how! Read on to learn how to conquer your fears!

How to conquer your fears (6 steps):

Step 1: IDENTIFY YOUR FEAR and ACKNOWLEDGE IT.

Don’t deny it. It’s like being an alcoholic… Step 1 is to admit it, and admit what it is.

Step 2: UNDERSTAND IT.

Most fears will cause you to have physical symptoms:

  • A racing heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Overwhelming anxiety or panic
  • A need to escape
  • A feeling of detachment
  • Faintness
  • A powerlessness

Step 3: RECOGNIZE THAT IT IS NOT RATIONAL and QUESTION IT.

When you avoid your fear, you limit yourself. It interferes with your normal daily functioning. Maybe you avoid certain places or situations because of your fear.

Step 4: IMAGINE AN OUTCOME YOU WANT once you face your fear.

See yourself as unafraid, calm, and happy.

Step 5: FACE YOUR FEAR, GRADUALLY.

Gradually confront it. Put yourself in a situation where you have no choice but to face it. Repeat this until you are comfortable in that situation.

Step 6: LEARN RELAXATION TECHNIQUES such as breathing deeply and talking to yourself positively and calmly.

Breathing controls your mind. Whenever you face one of your fears, take a deep breath. Breathing controls the flow of blood to your body and mind. Breathing clears your mind and gives you enough energy to tackle your demons.

A real-life example of a fear I developed:

I was in a car crash at the intersection of Arthur Street and Vickers Street. I was headed from Edward to Simpson, traveling east. A person was driving the wrong way on Vickers, which is a one-way street.

They, therefore, had no stop sign because it was a one-way street.

They smashed into the front of the cab I was in.

Afterwards, each time I was in a car traveling in that direction on Arthur Street, I would cringe as we neared that intersection.

I was particularly scared if we were in the right lane.

I was afraid that I was going to be hit again.

I had no control over the driver of the vehicle I was in. Most often it was a taxi.

I know that the odds of the same thing happening are rare, yet my heart beat faster, I had trouble breathing, I felt panicky, and I started sweating.

Eventually, as time passed and I crossed that intersection safely, my fears lessened. I practiced positive self-talk. I told myself to relax, that nothing was going to happen, that the odds were with me not against me, that I would be fine in a few seconds.

I imagined seeing no cars coming my way. I imagined an outcome in which I was not hit. I experienced that outcome each subsequent time I drove down that street (each time I faced my fear).

I still have the memory of being hit, but I can ride down that street without experiencing the physical symptoms I used to!

Changing your Mindset = Becoming More Successful

Success, like paradise, carries different meanings for each of us.

For many, success = money + prestige.

For some, success = freedom.

I wrote about my definition of paradise on Ryan Biddulph’s website, Blogging from Paradise. In this article, I mention that I used positive affirmations and the visualization technique to change my mindset and take my dream vacation.

Decrease Your Stress and Grow Your Success by using Meditation, the Law of Attraction, and visualization!

Entrepreneurs can get extremely stressed.

When this happens, it can affect their success.

When you are feeling stressed, you generally have many thoughts racing through your mind.

To slow down this activity and re-focus your thoughts, you can practice meditation. Meditation will allow you to change your thoughts so that you can put the Law of Attraction into effect in a more positive way. These two things will also help you employ the visualization technique, which will definitely cause your life to improve!

Your stress level will decrease, your thoughts will become clearer, and you will be able to cope with anything life throws your way!
We have already learned how to use positive affirmations to change our mindset.

Now we are going to learn how to use meditation, the Law of Attraction, and the Visualization technique to become more successful.

“It is estimated that the average person has between 12,000 and 70,000 thoughts a day. This is evidence enough to suggest that your goal should not be to control every thought. It is your dominant thoughts and beliefs that you must learn to bring under your conscious control as they are what largely determine your mental attitude. Meditation

Meditation is a technique that basically helps you to clear your mind. From my research, meditation actually has a different meaning to each individual.

Some people view it as simply a breathing practice. Some view it as the mental concentration of something. Some view it as a state of thoughtless awareness. And some view it as a way of simply focusing on one particular thing.

To help you form your own view of what meditation is – or can be – I’m going to share a few good examples of what meditation is and how it can help you.

Do you remember when I told you that our brains can be trained?

Look at Wikipedia’s definition of meditation:

“Meditation is a practice where an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness… to promote relaxation, build internal energy or life force and develop compassion, love, patience, generosity, and forgiveness.”

The website called The Buddhist Centre has this definition of meditation:

“Meditation is a means of transforming the mind… that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things…to cultivate new, more positive ways of being. …Such experiences can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.”

I like this definition because it focuses on emotional positivity which can transform your life.

Advice for Implementing Meditation in Your Life

Maxwell Ivey Jr, a blind entrepreneur and author (and a personal friend of mine), is internationally known as The Blind Blogger. He underwent a major transformation in his life when he had gastric bypass surgery and lost over 250 pounds in 4 years.

He subsequently wrote two books. His first one is Leading You Out of the Darkness into the Light: A Blind Man’s Inspirational Guide to Success, in which he provides 11 steps to success.

His second book is called It’s Not the Cookie, It’s the Bag: An Easy-to-Follow Guide for Weight Loss Success. In this book, there is a chapter titled Modern Meditation. He has created his own definition of meditation to include taking a regular, everyday activities (such as showering or petting a dog) and making those moments special. Using the example of petting his dog, Penny, he says:

“For anywhere from five to thirty minutes, I scratch her back, rub her belly, and stroke her fur. I focus on the repetitive motions and the warmth of her body. I think about the pleasure I am bringing her. I slow my thoughts and focus on my breathing. I get a sense of calmness and I relax for a short time.”

He goes on to say:

“There are many times in our day we could use to improve our mental health if we just allow ourselves to enjoy the moment.”

He also says:

“Meditation allows you to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase focus, improve your mood, and encourage you to make better choices.”

I completely agree with him!

You can practice different forms of meditation while doing almost any repetitive activity or chore – while doing the dishes, while exercising, while showering, while preparing meals, etc.

By shifting your concentration and focusing on what you are doing, you can calm yourself and change your mood. It’s easy to become more positive when you are enjoying the moment.

Another famous blogger and author I know, Ryan Biddulph, practices 20 minutes of meditation each day, immediately after he wakes up. Years ago, Ryan was a broke security guard. Now, he is the author of over 124 e-books and travels the world, island-hopping with his wife, Kelli, who used to suffer from depression.

Ryan and Kelli are now living out their dreams on a daily basis! His website is called Blogging from Paradise, and hers is called Life Made to Order.

Kelli is also an author. She has written a series of e-books on The Law of Attraction. She is an expert on this topic!

Together they have discovered that using these techniques together has made an incredibly positive impact on their lives.

The Law of Attraction

According to ancient beliefs, the Law of Attraction (LOA) is the basic Law of the Universe.

The Law of Attraction states that our predominant thoughts, feelings, and beliefs determine the experiences we attract into our lives, and it uses the power of the mind to translate whatever is in our thoughts to materialize them into a reality.

The LOA is a universal law where the prime belief is that “like attracts like.” This is similar to the laws of magnets! Therefore, if you think and believe negative things all the time, your life will be filled negative experiences, and if you think and believe positive things all the time, then your life will be filled with positive experiences.

Part of the theory of the LOA is that you can use it to attract situations, experiences, and material objects that you want into your life.

The theory is that if we consciously direct our focus on what we want, we will get more of it.

The more energy you give to a particular thought, the greater its power.

Because our beliefs determine how we think and how we feel, they also determine our energy – how we move through the world. By changing our thoughts, we change our energy. Our energy is the only thing we really have any control over.

However, there is something important you need to know: The only way to manifest your thoughts into things is to believe and live as if you have already accomplished your goal!

Therefore, changing your current belief system is crucial to using The Law of Attraction successfully.

This is where visualization comes into play.

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become.” ~ Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama)

Visualization

The visualization technique is used in conjunction with meditation, and also involves The Law of Attraction. By combining these three things, you can basically get what you want out of life!

The practice of visualization is actually quite simple, and follows these steps:

– Find a comfortable place where you can sit or lie down for 20 minutes without being disturbed.

– Breathe in and out slowly and deeply 10 times.

– Allow your mind to picture what you want, whatever that happens to be.

– Imagine that you have already gotten what you want. Let your mind evoke the different images of it.

– In your mind, use your senses to imagine how you will feel, what you would see, what you would touch, and what you would hear.

– Completely build a mental scenario and imagine yourself actually living in that scenario.

– Repeat this process until you get what you want. It may take you many times, but what you want will eventually manifest itself into a reality.

My Personal (and AMAZING!) Experience with Visualization

I have used this technique in my life several times. I will share an example with you now.

Let me first tell you about the climate in which I live. In the winter, the temperature drops to minus thirty-five degrees Celsius during the months of January and February. We get a lot of snow, too. During the summer months, it can get as hot as thirty degrees, but most days fall within the range of twenty to twenty-five degrees.

Let me also tell you that I have not done a lot of traveling during my life. However, I always wanted to take my dream vacation. This involved me relaxing on a beach, surrounded by palm trees (which I had never seen before in my life).

On Wednesday, February 17th, 2016, I went to an indoor swimming pool with my young nephew. There was a heated, smaller pool for children next to the big pool. On one of the walls next to this kiddie pool was a painting of a palm tree. My nephew was playing in the big pool with some boys and didn’t want me around him, so I decided to relax in the smaller pool.

I lay back, resting my head on one of the smaller floatation mats and stared at that painting, imagining myself living my dream. As I looked at that tree, I imagined it was real. I concentrated on the warmth of the water in the small pool and imaged it was the sun that was warming me. Because it was winter outside – very cold with a lot of snow – this was completely opposite of what my reality was. Yet I continued to imagine myself on a sandy beach, listening to the ocean waters lap against the shore, while I laid under the warm sun.

Four days later, on the night Saturday, Feb. 20th, 2016, I received a message from my brother on Facebook. He informed me that he and his girlfriend were going to Punta Cana for a week. They were leaving on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd, 2016. He invited me to go with them. (For the record, I have never traveled anywhere with my brother before. He has gone on many trips, too!)

Punta Cana is in the Dominican Republic, a primarily Spanish-speaking country. My son is half-Spanish, and I had learned to speak a bit of this language years ago, from my son’s father and his Spanish friends.

My brother sent me a link to the resort they were going to stay at and a link to where to buy a ticket. Although I was given only two days’ notice of this trip, when I looked at the resort, I was in awe. It looked so beautiful there! Immediately, I wanted to go with them! I wanted to live my dream. I wanted to relax. I wanted the stress to leave my life.

At that point in my life, I had been taking care of my mom for almost three months. She had broken her arm, and I had been preparing all of her meals for her as well as doing all of her chores (which involved cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping for her, doing my parents’ laundry, changing the cats’ litter box, etc.). I was tired and worn out, and I really needed a break.

I also had to stop working for a bit. I simply didn’t have time to work. Taking care of her was very demanding. To top things off, my parents had also decided to sell their house, which they lived in for 40+ years. I had a lot on my plate, as I was expected to help them go through their belongings, help them get rid of some of them, help them pack, help find an apartment to move to, help them move, and help them get set up in their new place.

But I also had just finished paying off my credit cards, and so I didn’t really have the funds to go on a trip.

Now here’s the thing.

I had just gotten my passport in January. I had never traveled anywhere before.

Since getting involved with and using positive affirmations, I started visualizing some of the things I wanted. I saw results, too, and my life had been moving forward for a while.

In the back of my mind, I knew I would eventually take my dream vacation. I just didn’t have any solid plans for when that would be.

Until I received that message from my brother.

I took my brother’s message as a sign that I was destined to go on this trip.

My brother and his girlfriend have both traveled to other countries before. They were experienced, they had done all the research, and I knew I would be safe with them.

They had even checked the weather forecast for Punta Cana for the following week. It was expected to be 28 to 32 degrees Celsius all week long, with no rain. This was perfect weather for relaxing on the beach under the sun!

I decided to throw caution to the wind and use my credit card to charge my trip.

Why not? For me, it was an opportunity of a lifetime.

So I did.

And I’m so happy I did.

I had two days to prepare for this trip. I bought bug spray (I don’t like bugs), three containers of sunscreen (I burn easily), and a visor/cap. I dug out my summer shorts and tops. I packed a few dresses, a dressy pair of sandals, and my flip-flops. I gathered my toiletries, contact lenses, and make-up. I selected a few books to read.

I read reviews about the hotel. I printed off some useful Spanish Travel Phrases.

I didn’t have time to buy a Spanish/English dictionary, but I had remembered some of the language I previously learned. I also had taken a college course in Conversational Spanish, so I was confident that I would know enough to get by and survive for a week without any issues.

I was set.

And I left my laptop at home. But I brought my phone charger and smartphone!

We left early Tuesday morning, as planned. The flight was a direct one and took about 5 hours. I had no problems passing through Customs. None of us did. We stayed at the Blau Natura Park Eco Beach Resort & Spa.

The packages we purchased were all-inclusive, which meant that they included all hotel costs, airfare, taxes (including the tax you have to pay just to leave the Dominican Republic!), all food, all drinks (including alcoholic drinks!), and all other taxes. It was a sweet deal.

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent there. I went from “stressed out” to “peaceful” in seconds. The moment I saw the beach, all worries left me. I didn’t think about problems, work, family, or… anything. Instead, I was “at one” with nature, and extremely happy that, for a full seven days, I would be able to live out my dream vacation!

This experience of mine is proof that visualization truly works.

The positivity of my experience led to many positive after-effects, too, which lasted a long time after I returned home!

Here are the after-effects and benefits I experienced:

I became rejuvenated.

My attitude changed, for the better. I became positive about everything!

I became more productive. I now work smarter, not harder.

My sexual drive returned. (For a single gal like me, this is HUGE!)

I am meeting new people in different ways now. Easily.

I’m not afraid of trying new things, or stepping out of my comfort zone. I even went zip-lining when I was there!

I created memories that will last me a lifetime. And I took over 1200 pictures to remind myself, lest I should ever forget!

I now have a desire to be the best version of myself that I can be. (Even though I’ve accomplished a lot already, I’m nowhere near reaching my point of self-actualization, but I strongly believe that I will reach that point, someday.)

I am more active and am eating better. Ergo, I’m healthier. And happier. Much happier!

Even though I had to charge this trip on my credit card, I knew I would’ve regretted it forever if I didn’t jump at the opportunity to take this vacation.

6 Instructions for How to Start Using Meditation, the Law of Attraction, and Visualization in YOUR Life

Visualization is used in conjunction with meditation techniques as well as The Law of Attraction and positive affirmations.

These techniques work. My positive experiences are proof!

One more positive affirmation you can add to your list is this one:

I ask for it, visualize it, claim it, expect it, and receive it!

1: Add this affirmation to the list that you made in the previous chapter (AKA the list you made in the blog post about positive affirmations):

2: Then open your workbook (or Word document or Google Doc) and write down three things you want and list some potential ways for how you can get them.

3: Make a vision board to help you visualize your goals. Tape or glue pictures of the things you want have and that reflect the type of person you want to be on a piece of Bristol board (or on a wall in your bedroom), and look at it each day.
•         Use pictures of houses, cars, pools, beaches, etc.
•         Arrange them in an aesthetically pleasing way.
•         Look at it often!

Then start visualizing yourself getting each thing.

4: Use meditation to refocus your thoughts and think about what you truly want.

Close your eyes and SEE yourself being successful at getting it. Feel it. Taste it. Touch it. See yourself achieving each outcome.

Practice this daily. The more often you practice meditation and visualization, the faster The Law of Attraction will work for you!

5: Start now, if it’s possible! Sit or lie down for 20 minutes.

Begin with breathing deeply and slowing down your racing thoughts.

Think of your 3 desires.

Pick one and focus on it.

Use the visualization technique to concentrate on building that scenario in your mind. Add as many details to this mental picture as you can. (If it will help you, you can write out the details in the space below.)

6: Each time you meditate and practice visualizing your desires, continue to add more and more details until you actually see yourself living as though you have received them!

In time, as you strengthen your new beliefs, they will come true!
