5 Types of Content that will Boost Your Blog's Traffic

It’s natural for bloggers to want to boost their blog’s traffic.

But many bloggers don’t know how to do that.

One way is to produce quality content. But which kind of content works best?

Today, my guest, Theodore Nwangene, will help you understand 5 different types of content that will help you boost your blog’s traffic.

Introduction: When frustration sets in

You stayed awake all through the night writing what you called “the perfect” blog post that would transform your blog traffic forever.

You religiously applied all the excellent blog post best practices as suggested by the experts – you used eye-catching, shareable images; you added paragraph breaks; you used H tags; and you made your content easily digestible. (Read How to Develop a Great Writing and Blogging Process to find out how to format your blog post using H tags.)

You also added the popular “click to tweet” buttons and even promoted the hell out of the post after it was published.

But after all these efforts, nothing happened. It all went dead like your regular blog posts, “not even the sound of a cricket.” Nobody apart from your family members bothered to visit your site, let alone share it.

Yeah, it’s that bad and right now you’re on the verge of giving up because, after all, it seems this whole blogging thing was never meant for you.

Well, hold on, my friend, before you finally call it quits…

…Give me a few minutes of your time.

First, I want you to clear your mind off the belief that blogging or internet marketing isn’t meant for you because it’s literally meant for everyone… yourself included.

Fluctuations in traffic and exposure happen to all of us. If you want to improve, there is no reason for poor content strategy on your blog.

However, the primary reason why your blog is not growing is that you’re not publishing the type of blog post that will produce your desired result. Your audience doesn’t also like what you’re publishing.

Did that ring a bell?

Finding a Solution to Boosting Your Blog’s Traffic

The solution is equally simple – just figure out what type of blog posts you should be publishing, that are proven to generate the result you crave, and then focus more on dishing out such content. And I bet your readers will also love it, and help you broadcast it.

Furthermore, when it comes to effective content marketing, you need a strategy that will not only save you time, but also guarantees tremendous results.

It is, therefore, time for you to identify the types of content that will drive results.

I’m talking about the kind of content your competitors have been using to beat you hands down – even when you work harder than they do – the type of content they’ve been using to make all the money from their little efforts.

Now, without further ado, let’s quickly devour these winning types of content that the big marketing influencers are utilizing right now in every niche.

1. Share Your Success Stories to Get More Exposure

There’s a new trend on the internet.

A lot of marketers have recently started publishing content that shares their success and achievements in various fields.

Interestingly, this type of content goes viral within a short period of publishing. I mean who wouldn’t want to read a blog post that shows “How We Grew Our Blog to 5,000+ Subscribers in Five Weeks”?

No, I didn’t make up that title; it’s actually a success story from the guys at Groove HQ.

How We Grew Our Blog to 5 000 Subscribers in Five Weeks

Now, judging by the fact that list-building has become a tedious activity on the internet today, I doubt if there’s anyone that won’t jump up on hearing that someone generated 5k email subscribers in 5 weeks.

Essentially, people go crazy upon seeing blog posts like this. Another reason that success-stories work is because, just like case studies, they also have a compelling story that their readers can easily relate to, and they usually follow a step-by-step tactic to tackle the problem.

Using the title above as an example:

Alex Turnbull, the founder of Groove HQ, noticed that these types of content were becoming some of their major hits. But like most other new bloggers and marketers, he had no interesting story to share with his readers.

In Alex’s own words:

“We didn’t have Ten Tips for Building a Successful Business or A Guide To Making Millions; because we hadn’t lived those stories yet.”

How We Grew Our Blog to 5 000 Subscribers in Five Weeks

But even at that, he didn’t quit. He identified a gap and filled it by sharing his ongoing journey to $100K/month revenue.

It’ll interest you to know that his blog took off after that, and eventually became one of the most-read blogs for startups.

That’s not all; the blog also helped him land endorsements from prominent influencers like Hiten Shah who’s the Founder and CEO of KissMetrics and Crazy Egg, and Andrew Warner of Mixergy.

Hiten Shaw quote

Right now, Groove’s monthly revenue is about $186,000.

Isn’t that incredible?

Bottom Line: When it comes to marketing, rules do not exist. Murder all the rules and create your own. Do not always do what others are doing to succeed; you might actually see more success by inventing your own strategies.

Follow the steps below to share your own unique stories thereby driving traffic to your blog:

  • Think of how you’re resolving some of your own tedious challenges
  • Try to relate your own challenges with the problems your audience battles with every day
  • Come up with an honest, transparent, and actionable blog post about how you’re surmounting that difficulty to reach your goals

If you do this very well, it’ll boost your blog traffic!

2. Share New Methods of Doing Something in Your Industry

Believe me, your audiences are always on the lookout for new strategies to tackle their problems. They’re basically tired and fed up of the same old tactics everyone has been using to get the same result.

If you can give them something new, unique, actionable, and that guarantees results, you’ve won the battle – they’ll help you and promote the hell out of it, and it’ll keep bringing you lots of traffic and leads until you beg them to stop (which I’m sure you won’t).

Unlike the success-stories type of posts we mentioned earlier, these types of content will help your audience tackle a problem via your newfound approach.

They really work wonders if properly done.

For example, if you’ve been on the internet for some time now, I’m sure you’re familiar with the popular term… Skyscraper Technique.

Link Building Case Study How I Increased My Search Traffic by 110 in 14 Days

Now, who can forget Brian Dean for that?

The Skyscraper Technique is an SEO tactic that guaranteed you results, such that you haven’t seen or heard before. That’s why this post is undoubtedly the most popular post on the Backlinko blog today.

Similarly, before the year 2010, the term “Growth Hacker” was not in existence.

But after Sean Ellis with the help of Patrick Vlaskovits and Hiten Shah introduced it in one of his blog posts, it became one of the most frequently used terms in the internet marketing industry. Andrew Chen later introduced it to a wider audience.

Today, “Growth Hacker” is used all over the internet. If you’ve never heard these two terms “Growth Hacker” and “Skyscraper Technique,” then I guess you’ve never been to the web before.

So, why is this type of content so amazing?

It’s simply because:

  • It positions you as an authoritative figure with innovative ideas in your industry
  • It tends to go viral on the various social media platforms out there
  • You’ll invent your own unique keyword that will rank you #1 in search results

So how can you write the “new method” type of content?

  • Identify a unique angle that helped you to solve a particular problem in your niche
  • Turn it into an easy, step-by-step solution
  • Give it a catchy, interesting, brandable, and descriptive name
  • Tell your audience why it’s so important, and how it’ll make their life easier
  • Share your new-found solution with an influencer in your niche who can help you publicize it

3. Create Interesting Infographics to Get Massive Social Shares and Backlinks

In case you don’t know, visual content (especially ones that are edited with a good photo editor, such as Colorcinch (aff link), gets the most social shares on the internet, and that includes Infographics.

According to Social Media Examiner, “37% of marketers said visual marketing was the most important form of content for their business, second only to blogging (38%).”

Similarly, another study by Brain Rules found that:

“When people hear information, they’re likely to remember only 10% of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65% of the information three days later.”

infographic about boosting your blog's traffic

(source)

So, if you’re not yet creating visual content like Infographics on your site, you’re really missing something.

Not only do Infographics drive traffic, they equally generate lots of backlinks.

Don’t take my word for it, though. Look at some stats!

KISSmetrics generated over 41,000 links from about 3,741 unique domains within one year by simply publishing 47 infographics.

Kind of cool, huh?

So you already know the importance of infographics content, but don’t have enough money to hire a designer?

Don’t worry. The good news is that you can do it yourself with tools like Easel.ly, Canva, and Infogr.am. It’s easier than you think.

While designing your infographic, have the following in mind:

  • Remember your primary message as you choose your colors, typography, and layout
  • Outline what you wish to visualize in your infographic to give actionable and factual information
  • Learn the five fundamentals of good design: repetition, consistency, alignment, proximity, and hierarchy
  • Email it to some of the influencers in your industry, and also share it on infographic sites like Visual.ly

4. Use Unique Research, Backed Up With Data

If you can carry out thorough research about something in your industry, and present it to your audience, that’ll go a long way.

Here’s the point: Digging up great pieces of information that nobody else has in an industry is a sure sign of authority.

However, the bad news is that researching and coming up with useful data that will really go viral in your niche isn’t a piece of cake. It requires a lot of patience, efforts, and sometimes… money.

However, if you can diligently do it to the best of your knowledge, the outcome will be totally worth it in the end.

For example, when CoSchedule’s published their findings from analyzing nearly one million headlines on the OkDork blog, it really gave them some excellent exposure in terms of shares and backlinks.

What We Learned Analyzing 1 Million Blog Headlines

The post generated over 400 social shares, and more than 500 backlinks from 97 referring domains as you can see on the screenshot below.

Open Site Explorer Link Research Backlink Checker Moz

Now, looking at that post title, you’ll agree with me that the post is worth sharing and linking to.

Fortunately, if you don’t have the necessary resources to carry out this type of research, you don’t have to panic. One good way to approach it is to smartly summarize the findings of other people just like the guys at Authority Nutrition did with their 11 proven benefits of ginger.

But if you can provide data from your own experiences, it’ll be much better. For example, good case studies equally count as research, provided you give tangible results and numbers.

5. Create Roundups of Other People’s Content

The weekly roundup is yet another excellent tactic for creating valuable content that your audience will like. Writing is not always easy, and there is a difference between academic and content writing.

It’s also hard for us to be productive writers all the time.

With all the various posts being published on the web on a daily basis, it’s easy for people to miss some of the content that will add value to their business and life.

Now, if you can make it a duty to always assemble this content for them in one place, they’ll thank you for it. Not only will they share and link to it, but the bloggers you mentioned are also 100% likely to do the same, which means more traffic and backlinks.

The weekly roundup post is usually a summary of the best content you’ve seen in your industry over a period of time.

Anna Hoffman is one of the people that do this very well in her Weekly Marketing Skinny posts:

Increase traffic for your blog

Now, you can be doing this on a weekly basis like most bloggers, but if you don’t have much time, I recommend trying it once every month, so there won’t be much pressure on you to consistently find great content in your industry.

The easiest way to go about this type of post is to track of the industry blogs in your niche. You can do this by subscribing to their email list and also following them on the various social media platforms.

Whenever they share something that’s really amazing, and you’re sure your audience will also find fascinating, make a note of it and prepare it for your round-up.

Don’t Quit – Give Your Readers What They Want!

Finally, you don’t have to quit because your blog isn’t growing the way you want, all you have to do to turn things around for good is to give your audience exactly what they want… so they will return to your blog!

Pick any or all of the 5 types of content I shared here and start making use of it to see what changes it’ll make in your business.

  9. As they say It’s easy to build a blog, but hard to build a successful blog with significant traffic. We all are publishing content as a way to build our audiences and increase traffic to our websites. However, we may not be getting everything we could from each piece of content we create. One thing should be crystal clear, If you are serious about your content, then you also need to be serious about driving as much traffic to it as possible.

  15. Hi Theodore & Lorraine,

Your article is amazing. I vibe the tips you provided us. A roundup post is a content type that I haven’t considered until now. They work like magic because when I read other bloggers roundup post, the social media shares and comments associated with it are great.

Indicating that it’s a great source of traffic. However, inasmuch as images like Infographic are great, videos and podcast are remarkable as well.

Not everyone loves to read text content, so creating videos or podcasts can skyrocket your traffic in less time. For example, Ryan Biddulph and his buddy Alonzo ran a video content test drive to see if they could create more of those.

The result according to Ryan was a massive 25,000 views. So, it goes to show you the power of video content. In fact, study shows that videos will account for about 80℅ of all traffic in the next few months.

Thanks for sharing Theodore, and thank you too, Lorraine, for publishing!

  21. Hi Theodore,

Thank you for this amazing post. Indeed, these 5 types of content are some of the best that can be created. And, in fact, they don’t require a big budget, but they do need a lot of time and research. Especially for case studies, as you need to try and fail and succeed before publishing the article. Although, one can always find a way around that as well. I think the community now refers to this type of content as linkbait, as it makes it nearly impossible not to link to such content once you read it.

Thanks again! And thanks to Lorraine for giving Theodore the opportunity to share his knowledge with us!a

Infographics is indeed a pleasing showing off to do a lot of shares and backlinks. Most of the people don’t use it because it takes a lot of research and as well as designing to make the infographics. -For example, gather all the main points from your article and turn it into a YouTube video.
-Gather one of those points (the most memorable) and create an image with a quote, then Pin it on Pinterest

  33. Hey Theodore and Lorraine!

I love the tips on content marketing that you are giving here!

I could not agree more with everything you’ve mentioned.

When it comes to building a successful blog online, it is all about the content and the marketing of it. You have to work to be unique and put out content that actually people are actually looking for. You are a problem solver here – this is the mentality you have to have.

You also need to promote the heck out of that content. There is something I’ve learned, from experience and from successful bloggers, you must apply the 80/20 rule. Spend 20 percent of your time creating epic valuable content, and spend 80 percent of your time promoting that content. But, you have to make sure the content you are creating is super great for your niche’s audience! 😉

    Just my 2cents!

    Thanks for sharing!

    Cheers! 😀

It’s simply because your audience doesn’t like the blog posts if you keep on posting same stuff again and again. To provide a bit of background, I got the following benefits by using a different angle each time.

    1. Gain Influence – It’s more art than science, but the bottom line is that gaining influence matters.
    2. Establish Yourself as an Expert in Your Field – Becoming an expert in your field is just smart business.
